Problem 16 - GMAT Number Properties

If 34 books are picked from a box and distributed among a group of students, which of the following is NOT a possible number of students in the group if after giving each student the same number of books the number of books put back in the box is two less than the number of students?

(A) 6
(B) 9
(C) 10
(D) 12
(E) 18

    34 = nk + (n-2), n and k are positive ints.

    36 = n(k+1) or n | 36

    Answer is C, since 10 does not divide 36.

    x(y+1)=36
    x cant be 10 as Blaoism said - its not a factor of 36.

  3. ABE CHODU.....ANSWER 9 HAI....GIVE 3 BOOKS TO EACH OF 9 STUDENTS...THEN U HAVE 7 BOOKS LEFT WHICH IS 2 LESS THAN THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHICH IS 9

  4. Nahi answer is 10 dude... 34/10 gives 4 as remainder so it's the only odd man out among the options .
